As spring emerges, I’m under no illusions as to how tough the winter months have been for some in Peckham.

The legacy of the last Conservative Government is millions of families living in cold, poorly insulated homes facing sky-high energy bills.

No one should have to make the choices that many families have been forced to make – cutting back on food, going without heating, rationing hot water- just to stay afloat. I know that we must act now to make sure that next winter is different. We must take decisive action to bring down energy bills permanently.

That is what we are determined to do.

Last month we announced that we are accelerating the Warm Homes Plan, which is delivering targeted schemes focused on those who need help upgrading their homes the most. This includes rolling out grants to insulate homes, install heat pumps, and fit solar panels.

These upgrades could help families save hundreds off their bills. Proper insulation will keep the warmth in without racking up huge bills. A new heat pump will replace old, inefficient boilers, helping households benefit from cleaner, more secure energy. Solar panels will generate electricity, easing financial pressure month after month.

Peckham is part of this national effort to improve five million of the worst-off homes, ensuring those struggling most aren’t left behind.

In February we made the important announcement that we are consulting on proposals which would allow nearly 3 million more families, including almost one million more households with children, to get money of their energy bills next winter through the Warm Home Discount. This will provide critical support to consumers to ensure that they receive Government help with energy bills.

And this is just the beginning. The road ahead is clear – we need to go further. Massive investment in renewable energy which will provide homegrown energy across Great Britain, retrofitting homes will ensure that no one is trapped in cold, expensive, and inefficient housing.

As Labour works to drive up living standards, we must ensure that warm, affordable homes are the foundation of that ambition.

This is about delivering real, lasting change. I know how many people in Peckham need to see warmer homes and lower bills, ensuring that families in Peckham can look ahead to next winter with hope.

I am working hard to make that a reality for the people of Peckham.
