Miatta Fahnbulleh
I recently returned from the Labour Party Conference, where the Prime Minister made it clear that we are in the fight of our lives, as our country faces a defining choice.
I was proud to sit in the hall and hear the Prime Minister call out the racism, hate and division that is being stoked in our communities and declare that our party will fight every day for the tolerant, decent and compassionate Britain that we all know.
Peckham is a community where we live those values: where I see decency and compassion on display every day, in the school leaders working to give our children an equal start, in our youth outreach workers, in our community volunteers, in our health workers, and across our community.
I know that the divisive and destructive politics that we have witnessed recently has caused real fear and concern across our community, and I will always fight to ensure that those spouting that agenda do not win.
I am clear on how we respond to the rise of the far right and win that fight. We deliver the change that we know that people are desperate to see in their local communities.
We put more money in people’s pockets, by investing in our local businesses and communities and growing the economy from the grassroots.
We deliver affordable and decent homes for those trapped by the housing crisis, with our ambitious plan to build new homes.
We get our public and community services back on their feet.
Most importantly of all, we ensure that we deliver change by handing power to our local communities, to those who know what is really needed to deliver the community renewal which will make a difference in people’s lives.
I have long advocated for the transfer of power and funding out of Westminster and to our communities.
By giving local people the power to say how they want their communities to change, not only can we deliver the change that people really need to see, but we can also bring our communities together, at a time when that is so desperately needed.
In Parliament, I will continue to advocate for this crucial agenda: by delivering on the community right to buy powers I talked about in last month’s column, by working closely with Mayors and Local Authorities on the powers that they want to deliver for their local communities and, as a proud Co-operative Member of Parliament, by giving co-operative principles the recognition they deserve in Government.
At the heart of this agenda is ensuring that communities have the voice and power to advocate for the changes that they need locally: and my first priority will always be Peckham.
That is why I am kicking off a new listening exercise to hear from everyone in my constituency about what issues are most important to you and what would be the biggest improvements and changes we can fight for in our local area.
I want to start with a survey which will be running until Christmas, followed by community listening exercises to hear from more of you.
My work will always be rooted in Peckham, and I look forward to hearing more from my constituents to help guide my work locally and nationally.
