Miatta Fahnbulleh

Speaking to people across Peckham, I hear time and again that the economy is not working for them.

Households are struggling to make ends meet however hard they work, and people’s standard of living has stagnated over the last fourteen years. No family should be put in the position where they struggle to afford to pay their bills and buy essentials.

Above all, no child should be forced to grow up in poverty, denied fair opportunities and a good start in life. But yet, under the Conservatives child poverty sky-rocketed, leaving more than 4.5 million children across the UK living in poverty. As a Labour MP, I won’t stand for this.

We’ve come a long way since the election last year, with the roll out of free childcare, free school meals and breakfast clubs to help give all children the start they deserve in life, a once in a generation investment in affordable and social housing to tackle the housing crisis, the Renters Rights Bill empowering tenants in England to challenge unreasonable rent increases and an increase in wages for those workers who need it most, just few of the changes that this Government has brought in to lift people out of the pressures that they face.

Yet, too many children across Peckham continue to live in poverty, and too many families struggle with the cost of day-to-day essentials.

If you take one message away from the budget last week it’s this: our Labour government understands the pressure that people are facing, and we are committed to changing this. That’s why at the heart of this budget were measures to tackle child poverty and the cost-of-living crisis.

Firstly, we scrapped the Tories’ cruel two child benefit cap. This one step will lift half a million children out of poverty. Because no child should be forced to live in poverty, denied the right to an equal start in life, because of the circumstances of their parents. This means more than 3,300 children in Peckham who will no longer be growing up in poverty, instead able to go to school with food in their stomachs ready to learn, do homework at home in a warm space that parents can afford to heat, and able to afford essentials such as school books and uniform. This is life changing for these children.

The government also announced an increase in the National Living wage, because good work must pay well. So, if you are one of more than 250,000 people in London receiving the National Living Wage, you will be on average £900 better off per year. We are also raising the National Minimum Wage for all those between the ages of 18 and 20, because young people deserve well paid employment.

We also increased the state pension by 4.8%. This is money directly into people’s pockets, helping tackle the cost-of-living squeeze directly.

We are also tackling the everyday costs that so many people struggle with. At the heart of that, is a reduction to energy bills for every household of £150 on average by next April. In addition to the £150 Warm Homes Discount rolled out this winter, that means £300 off energy bills for six million households. This will be so important for the countless families across Peckham who tell me that they are struggling to pay their bills.

Alongside this, we introduced freezes to everyday essentials: freezes on rail fares and fuel duty, to help people afford their daily commute, and freezes to prescription charges for those unwell.

These measures go to the heart of the challenges that people in Peckham face day-to-day.

This is what a Labour Government in power can do. Real action to improve the living standards of thousands across Peckham.

Making work pay for hard working people.

And lifting half a million children out of poverty, giving them the best start in life.
